Empowering people
Addressing poverty

How we work

5000Plus is committed to challenge and equip churches and communities to bring a long term solution to the problems of the poor around them. At the heart of what we do is teaching people to start, grow and successfully run livelihood projects.

Peoples' esteem and a sense of well-being grows as they realise they can increase their income through their own efforts. They tap into local expertise and support one another. They develop the freedom to meet the challenges of feeding, clothing, providing shelter and educating their families. Many go on to care for the disadvantaged in their extended families and communities.

In Kenya 5000Plus has developed a simple, proven and transferable model of achieving this. We are seeing some amazing results.

The 5000Plus Model

Step 1: Share the vision

Step 1: Share the vision

When visiting new communities, 5000Plus invites key leaders to attend a seminar presenting the vision. If this inspires them, then we offer to work alongside that community, empowering them to practical action to help the poor.

Step 2: Income generation training seminar

Step 2: Income generation training seminar

At the invitation of a community we hold training seminars in which we give practical training in the choosing, planning and successful running of Income Generation Projects.

Step 3: Look for response

Step 3: Look for response

When we receive reports of people responding to this training and beginning projects, we then look to return and build long term relationship and support.

We have found that within a year up to 50% of those attending the training begin a project with many testimonies of income being increased substantially.

Step 4: Training local community volunteers

Step 4: Training local community volunteers

We identify possible local community volunteers and train them to support and build long term relationship with project owners and to spread the vision. We have found people in most communities who have a heart to help others around them and who can become catalysts for the growth of new projects. They are the key to the long term effectiveness of the model.

Step 5: Establish savings and loan groups

Step 5: Establish savings and loan groups

We encourage and support the establishment of small locally run savings and loan groups. In some the members also work on co-operative projects in addition to their own personal ones. These groups are proving so effective in releasing not only financial resource but the dynamic of people working and supporting one another on a daily basis with encouragement and healthy peer accountability.

5000Plus publish a brief guideline that enables groups to start saving and making loans to members.

Step 6: Be generous and spread the vision

Step 6: Be generous and spread the vision

We encourage every project owner, every church and every community to spread the vision and empower others to lift themselves out of poverty.

This model works. It's simple, sustainable, transformational and transferable. It spreads virally from place to place. We regularly hear of family income going up 3 or 4-fold, with even whole communities impacted.
